Field experiments were conducted in Heyang, Shaanxi Province from 1992 to 1995 to study the effects of fertilizer application and mulch straw on water use efficiency ( WUE) of winter wheat and spring sunflowers.

Straw mulch could adjust and control soil water supply, which decreases crop water consumption at seedling stage, increases water consumption at critical period of crop water requirement, and make the state of crop water demand and supply tend to be balanced.
